What’s Wrong With Marching to the Beat of Your Own Drum? Nothing!

Have you ever felt like you didn’t belong or didn’t quite fit in? If so, that means you must be doing something right!

While society and the workplace may dictate that conformity is of the utmost importance and that you should blend in with your colleagues in order to be the most efficient, I’m here to tell you that idea isn’t so. Individual thinking truly does matter and can be the difference between growth and stagnation!

If you have a great idea, don’t doubt your idea or squelch it! Just research the ideas that you have to see if they are valid and DO IT! I’ve done this many times in my life, and it’s always turned out to be successful for me. Have the confidence in your expertise and knowledge, and use those components to design, create, and implement a new approach! If your way of thinking isn’t aligned with what others think, do not be afraid to go against the grain if you feel your idea is right. Remember, leaders create change, and if MSPs don’t do their jobs well, the potential harm to patients would be increased!

The buzz term that you’ve probably heard a lot lately is “patient-centered.” We need to be focused directly on the patient and working to his or her greatest needs. Well, how about being MSP-centered? Remember to focus on your own well-being, too, not just the patient’s! As the old saying goes, before you can help others you must first help yourself, so do advocate for yourself as you would a patient!

Remember, if you can be your own thinker and be independent in how you think, dress, and behave, you will be successful! Hang in there and keep doing things to the beat of your own drum! Who knows whom you will help and inspire? The possibilities are limitless.
