Have you ever noticed the vibe that others give off? Some people may unknowingly put out an unfriendly, aloof air while other people can wipe away tension from others’ shoulders or put a smile on their faces simply by walking into the room.
We all have our own special gifts to offer others each day. One of the gifts I was given is my ability to observe and really hear what others are saying. Many MSPs are unable to see the image and level of professionalism (or lack thereof) that they are emanating, even when they don’t say anything. We often give others cues without awareness. Crossed arms can mean that you are closed-off. Fidgeting, averting your eyes often when talking to others, or playing with your hair can convey nervousness. A stoic, unsmiling face can give off the air of unfriendliness.
What kind of vibes are you giving off? Are you a source of light, guidance, wisdom, and happiness for others, or do you come off as unfriendly, unprofessional, or close-minded? Is this how you really want to be perceived?
If you want to change your vibe and flourish as an MSP, read below to see how you can do just that!
Evaluate Honestly – The first step toward success in anything is realizing that you have a weakness or obstacles in your way. Take a moment to evaluate your behavior and body language honestly. Do you find yourself not volunteering, making snide or disrespectful remarks, deferring blame to others, or immediately saying “no” to new ideas and procedures more often than not? If you feel like this might be you, don’t fret – you can still find your true vibe and shine!
Learn From Others – Observe how others carry themselves and speak. You may find that the ones who give off the best vibes are positive, smiling, uplifting, professional, honest, confident, flexible, understanding, and patient. If you have any of these traits, that’s great – just keep emphasizing them. If you find yourself lacking in any of these areas, then you’ve found the parts of yourself that you should begin working on.
Examine Your Inner Thoughts – The vibes that you give off are more obvious than you might think they are, and they stem from your inner thoughts and attitudes. Look at your inner thoughts – are they more positive or negative overall? Instead of thinking, “I don’t want to be at work today,” “I feel incompetent,” or “I won’t make a difference anyway,” try thinking more positive thoughts such as, “I am strong, confident, and able,” “I’m doing a good job,” or “What can I do to serve others today?” You’ll be amazed at how much this can change the vibe you send out.
Determine How You Want to Be Perceived – Do you want others to see you as a friendly, confident, and professional leader? Then work toward that goal, but do it in a positive manner. Instead of thinking in negatives (“I don’t want to be seen as unfriendly, incompetent, or unprofessional”), tell yourself what you want. “I want to be curious.” “I want to cultivate greater patience.” “I want to be more open to new procedures, policies, and ideas.” Once you have this set, then you’re ready for the next step.
Practice, Practice, Practice – Just like with anything else in life, you’ll need to take time to work on your vibe and how you want others to perceive you. Highlight your positive traits as often as you can every day, and of course, never beat yourself up if you have a bad day. After all, we’re only human!
What kind of vibe do you want to send out to others? If you want to flourish, choose how you want to be perceived, show up, and never give up. And as always, MSPs, SMILE!
